Interview with Eyes Set to Kill’s Alexia and Anissa Rodriguez
When it comes to heavy metal, it has been mainly a male dominated genre. From Ozzy Osbourne to Matt Heafy, these were kings or Gods in the metal community. However, in recent years, there have been more women fighting for a spot in the head-banging world. Some of these wailing chicks include Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, Amy Lee of Evanescence, and Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey of the Butcher Babies to name a few. On January 30, 2015, I attended a show at the Slidebar Rock-N-Roll Kitchen that was headlined by another well known band called Eyes Set to Kill. This is a group that is fronted by Alexia and Anissa Rodriguez. After the show, I got the chance to talk to them. They are really down to Earth metal chicks.
The first question I asked was directed to Alexia regarding how the band got its name, to which she explained it came from a line in a poem she wrote in high school. Of the two sisters, Anissa was mainly the one who answered the questions. We went into some detail about the new song they played during the show, “Break.” I asked a couple of questions about the new record they have been working on since late last year, but they could not give me a title or an official release date (suppose to be released this year). According to Alexia, the group originally had another lead singer in the beginning of the band’s career but they left to work on another project, which is how she became the lead singer. They both told me that the band that influenced them the most was OC legends Thrice. There were a couple of questions that the girls did not want to answer, so I politely did not pursue those questions any further.
Overall, their performance was incredible. Anissa and Alexia Rodriguez were excellent to chat with. They were an absolute delight during the entire interview. When they asked to skip the two questions, they were respectful. I want to give a special thanks to their manager Daniel Vega for setting the interview up so quickly. If you are a fan of heavy rock and female-fronted bands, then this is a group you have to check out. I cannot wait for their new album to be released. If the songs are like “Break,” then it is going to be masterful. To Eyes Set to Kill, thanks for chat. I salute you. Horns up ~B-Mac
