Country Legend Lacy J. Dalton: A Trailblazing Icon of Authenticity

In the realm of country music, there are few artists as genuine and enduring as Lacy J. Dalton. With a career spanning several decades, Dalton has carved out a special place for herself in the hearts of country music enthusiasts around the world. Her distinctive, husky voice and emotionally charged lyrics have made her a trailblazing icon of authenticity in the genre.

Born as Jill Lynne Byrem in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1946, Lacy J. Dalton made her way to Nashville in the late 1970s, at a time when country music was undergoing significant transformations. She quickly gained recognition for her raw, unapologetic style that stood in stark contrast to the polished sound of many of her contemporaries. Hits like "Takin' It Easy" and "16th Avenue" not only showcased her powerful vocals but also demonstrated her ability to connect with listeners on a profound level. Dalton's willingness to tackle difficult subjects, such as the struggles of songwriters in "16th Avenue," endeared her to fans and solidified her status as a true country music legend.

Dalton's impact on the genre extends beyond her chart-topping hits. Her willingness to pave her own path and stay true to her unique style in an industry known for conformity is a testament to her unwavering commitment to authenticity. Lacy J. Dalton's legacy as a country legend is not just defined by her music but also by her enduring influence on generations of artists who continue to draw inspiration from her fearless approach to storytelling through song. Her name will forever be synonymous with the very essence of what country music represents – heartache, resilience, and a deep connection to life's real stories.

Dalton is now releasing her original album, which has never been heard on any other format except for the original vinyl nearly 50 years ago, under her name, Jill Croston! Almost no one even knew this album existed…until now and Center Stage Magazine is honored to be premiering the first track "Good Time Mama". We asked Dalton about this song and here is what she said; "It doesn't hurt to take a little vacation into some bluesy ragtime once in a while, and I'd obviously been listening to a lot of songs from that period, like Judy Henske, Big Momma Thorton and Ma Rainey."

About Missy Wolf

Missy Wolf Co-Founder, Editor, Journalist & Vice President of the American Country Music Association

From an early age I knew music and entertainment were in my blood. I have always been enamored with the idea of being in this industry, though I never wanted to be a front and center "Star". Taking the audience behind the scenes for up close conversations with the artists they love is where I want to be. Life in lyrics has always been my style, so as my favorite country artist Wade Hayes sings, I am living my life and chasing my dreams! Conducting interviews, meeting talented people and sharing stories and adventure are my passion. My new favorite hashtag is #iaskyouanswer, so stay tuned for more interviews, articles and adventures!
