CMA Fest Artist Spotlight: Don Gates
There was bound to come a time that I would have an embarrassing interview story for you all. That moment, that dreaded walk-of-shame moment occurred with the most understanding artist I have ever met. Don Gates graciously allowed me to interview him not once, not twice but three times. Go ahead and laugh. We did. In fact, stop what you are doing and click play.
Our conversation did not start out as they normally do. This was because we had two rehearsals. I am seriously still laughing. Gates is one hell of a guy for putting up with mistakes. Beyond that, he is a talented country artist with a jaw-dropping story. How exactly does one end his 25-year career as a member of a hardcore metal band for a singing career in country music? Listen as Gates explains his transition. Typically, metal fans are not fans of country music and vice versa. I needed to know if the Brutality fans were supportive of his move. Are they supportive now?
I had so many questions for Gates. We discussed his songwriting and the differences among both genres. Country music has always been in his blood, so returning to his roots was not a complete surprise to those who know him. His wife even said to him that he was “Almost a Cowboy.” That was it. That needed to be the title of his debut EP. Almost a Cowboy is his baby. This project is definitely a labor of love and he should be proud.
Gates displays stellar songwriting skills on this EP. His song “Why?” is an emotional story of a boy whose father left him and messed up his life. Though it is not a personal story for Gates, it is a story that sadly many can relate to. Much like the song Kelly Clarkson recently performed on the final American Idol show bringing Keith Urban to tears, this song floods your heart with strong emotions.
If you are in the Tampa area tonight, April 15, 2016, be sure to attend the EP release party at Brass Mug. This is an all age show complete with a raffle to win one of the most beautiful electric-acoustic guitars I have seen. Dean guitars donated this guitar for the occasion and Gate will be playing it on stage before announcing the lucky winner. Do not miss your chance. Go see Gates play, enter for your chance to win and have a fabulous time.
