Star performances on tap plus a few surprises
When it comes to country music awards shows, it can sometimes feel like a bowl of alphabet soup with the CMAs, ACMs and CMTs, plus the CCMAs (Canada) and the BCMAs (Britain)… and of course, the People’s Choice Country Awards, not to mention the Grammy Awards, the Americana Music Honors & Awards, and the GMA Dove Awards that often feature country acts among the performers and award recipients during their gala shows. Back to our bowl of alphabet soup, there are the ASCAP Awards, BMI Awards, and the SESAC Awards, presented by the three largest performing rights associations in the USA.
All of these award shows shine the well-deserved spotlight on the artists, songwriters, and producers who create their amazing music – and allow fans to see their favorite acts onstage or on the TV screen.
Next up on the calendar are the 58th CMA Awards, presented by the Country Music Association set for Wednesday, November 20, 2024, and broadcast 8/7CT on ABC TV from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. (The show will stream on Hulu the following day.)
The co-hosts will be the returning two-time CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan and NFL legend Peyton Manning who will be joined for the first time by Lainey Wilson, the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year, as announced in a witty video directed by George Flanigen.
Morgan Wallen might need to add a shelf to his trophy cabinet with a total of seven nominations – four of which relate to his collaboration with Post Malone on “I Had Some Help” getting nods for Single of the Year, Song of the Year, Musical Event of the Year and Music Video of the Year. Not far behind are Cody Johnson and Chris Stapleton, each with five nominations. Lainey Wilson had better stay close to the stage between hosting segments as she is up for four awards.
Interestingly, if Chris Stapleton picks up the Entertainer of the Year Award it will be his first, despite it being the eighth time he has received a nomination in that category. Also noteworthy: Morgan Wallen has not received a CMA Award since receiving the New Artist of the Year Award four years ago.
Always a fascinating category is the New Artist of the Year Award (known as the New Horizon Award when it was introduced in 1981 when Terri Gibbs was the recipient). Past winners have included: The Judds (1984), Randy Travis (1986), Garth Brooks (1990), Brad Paisley (2000), Taylor Swift (2007), Luke Combs (2018), and last year’s winner Jelly Roll. The 2024 CMA Awards should prove to be another star-spangled gala with probably a few surprises along the way. If you want to follow along you can find a full list on several online sites including here at Wikipedia.
