Saturday, April 22 is the date of this year’s Record Store Day and local stores are stepping up to the plate… or turntable.  Each year, Record Store Day offers music lovers, makers and sellers the opportunity to celebrate the history and culture that set Music City apart. Artists offer exclusive deals and merchandise to their fans while simultaneously supporting the independent stores that help our music scene flourish.

Among those participating in a big way: Acme Radio Live and The Groove Record Store are providing another way for Nashville residents to engage with their local music scene. They’re hosting their sixth annual Record Story Day event on Saturday, April 22, at The Groove, featuring live performances from local artists such as Dedo, Patzy, Future Crib, Jamiah, Brian Brown and more. Proceeds from the event will benefit Oasis Center’s Just Us program, which provides youth members of the LGBTQ community with resources and support.  

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today, Record Store Day is celebrated at independently-owned brick-and-mortar record stores around the world.

Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, DJs spinning records, and on and on. In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point. For several years, 60% or more of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers.

Acme Radio Live is devoted to the discovery, preservation and lifestyle of Nashville music. Under the direction of Program Director Justin Hammel, Acme Radio Live is springboard for up-and-coming artists to expand their fan base globally with live streamed concerts and exclusive interviews. 

The Groove Record Store is located at 1103 Calvin Avenue in the Lockeland Springs neighborhood of Nashville. Music gets under way at The Groove at 11:00 am.

Among the many other Middle Tennessee ‘brick & mortar’ retailers participating in this year’s Record Store Day: Variety Records and Spinners Record Shop (both in Columbia), Luna’s Record Shop and Carpe Diem (both in  Franklin), The Great Escape in Madison and Murfreesboro, plus Grimey’s, Vinyl Tap, Swaggie Records, McKay Books all in Nashville, and many more.
