Spotlight on Samantha Smith: A Conversation with the Heart of the Winchesters at Creation Entertainment's Supernatural Convention in Nashville
I still cannot believe I got to sit down with Samantha Smith. When Matt Irizarry—personal assistant to Creation Entertainment co-founder Gary Berman, asked if I wanted to interview her, the word “yes” flew out of my mouth before my brain caught up. Matt walked me over to her table at the Grand Hyatt in Nashville, and my stomach did flips. Rejection terrifies me every single time. Luckily, her schedule had aviability, so here we are.
The second she walked up, every worry I had melted. Samantha is calm, sweet, and actually present. She looked me in the eye, smiled, and made the whole room feel smaller and warmer. I knew her birthday was coming up (November 4), so I started there, partly because I am the type who would kick myself later if I forgot. From that moment, we talked like old friends who had not seen each other in years. Two strangers, zero awkwardness. I could have stayed there all afternoon.
Samantha first stepped onto the Supernatural set in 2005 as Mary Winchester, the mom we only knew from a photograph and a burning ceiling. Over fifteen seasons she grew into a hunter with scars, secrets, and a heart big enough to carry two boys through hell, literally. She also played Eve in season six and a ghost in season twelve, proving she can flip from angel to monster without missing a beat. Outside the SPN world, she popped up on Friends, Jerry Maguire, Transformers, Rizzoli & Isles, and Criminal Minds. The woman works.
Life off-screen has thrown punches. She beat breast cancer once, faced it again in 2020, and powered through a double mastectomy. She shares the journey on social media with zero filter and total grace. Married, mom to a son, she keeps moving forward.
Samantha is the real deal, kind, funny, loved by all who know her, and worth every minute. Thank you, Samantha, for the time, the laughs, and for being you. I hope you had a wonderful time celebrating your birthday, and here is to everything ahead. I cannot wait to watch it all unfold.~Missy
