Conversations with Missy: Supernatural Matt Cohen
Matt Cohen didn’t just attend Creation Entertainment’s The Road So Far… The Road Ahead tour in Orlando. He occupied it. He filled the hallways, the photo lines, the karaoke stage, the lunch breaks, and our brief on-camera interview with so much kinetic kindness that people left the DoubleTree feeling like they’d spent the weekend with a favorite cousin who also happens to be a movie star.
That energy is captured perfectly in our conversation. It was a few minutes of pure Matt that somehow still feels like he could have kept going for an hour. He barely needed a question. Hand him a microphone and he is already mid-story, mid-song, mid-cartwheel.
He bounded through the weekend promoting his independent film Exes, the action-comedy he directed and stars in alongside Briana Buckmaster, Mark Sheppard, and Felicia Day. He talked about it the way someone talks about a family project they poured everything into: proud, grateful, and slightly amazed it exists at all. “I called all my friends,” he said, “and we made a feature film.” Then he immediately told everyone where to watch it, Amazon Prime, Tubi, Plex, Apple TV, because supporting independent filmmaking, he insisted, is how you keep Hollywood standing when the tax incentives disappear.
The fans already knew the secret. Matt gives you your money’s worth and then some extra you might want to return. The selfies were not polite poses. They were events. He threw himself into them, ridiculous, joyful, slightly unhinged, the kind of photos people will still be laughing at in five years. That late entrance call-out was not just a joke. It was the thesis. If you are in the room with Matt Cohen, you are in it. He is going to see you. He is going to make the whole place laugh. He talked about wanting people to stay healthy enough to do kickflips at ninety. He started an impromptu Lion King performance in the middle of the interview because I asked if he wouldd ever consider doing the Broadway show at one of these conventions. He called the conventions “core memories” and meant it. You could feel how much these weekends still matter to him, not as a job, but as chosen family.
Our interview itself is only a few minutes long, but it is a perfect snapshot. I could have handed him the microphone and walked away. He would have been fine. Better than fine. He would have turned it into a one-man show that left everyone smiling.That is the real story of Orlando. Not just that Matt Cohen was there, but that he showed up fully, generous, ridiculous, sincere, and still wildly in love with the people who keep showing up for him. In a fandom that has been going for twenty years, that kind of presence is rare. And it is why so many people walked out of that hotel already planning the next city.
