Conversations with Missy: Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum

When I am given the chance to interview an artist that I have been a huge fan of for decades, I immediately say “yes.” Maybe it is my inner fan girl that needs to do it, but these artists have an incredible story that I know people need to hear. Recently, I caught up with Dave Pirner from Soul Asylum.

You can say I was a bit nervous going into this conversation, as I had trouble containing my excitement. Thankfully, Pirner was extremely kind and gracious to Center Stage Magazine. I instantly felt comfortable and though I told him ahead of time that the fan girl inside of me might pop out, he just smiled and let me be me.

I must admit, I was very surprised by his calming, deep voice. I did not expect him to be so laid back and charming. I instantly felt we could speak about anything as if we had been friends for years. During our conversation, we spoke about the latest album Change of Fortune, which coincidentally is a title that as of that day I was able to relate to. Due to the connection, I felt to the album’s title, I wanted to know how they as a band came up with it. Watch our conversation now for all the details.

Still, there was one thing I knew I needed to tell Pirner. Out of all the videos we grew up watching daily, it was the video for “Runaway Train” that I will never forget. That video put out the Faces & Names of many missing children for hundreds of thousands of fans to see. Please watch our conversation now to see Pirner recall that incredible experience. I was completely touched as he spoke about the victims and what this video did for them.

Soul Asylum is a band that has had much success throughout the years. After 11 full-length albums and countless shows, Pirner’s energy on stage and unchanging voice keep their fans eager for more. Their latest video for “Super Sonic” is creative and fun, leaving fans with a strong desire to see more. I am one of them.

After watching these guys on stage and listening to Pirner nail the delivery of each song, I look forward to catching them again soon. Watching the packed house at LA’s Whisky a Go Go have a great time leads me to believe that everyone there will be attending the next show as well. Special shout out to the young man who was second in line to see Soul Asylum. We never caught your name, but we had a blast watching how much fun you had at this remarkable show.

Until next time guys, please follow Soul Asylum on social media, like and share their pages, shop their latest merchandise and do not forget to grab yourself a copy of their latest album Change of Fortune. ~Missy

Special thank you to Kristin Cisneros for the amazing photography!

About Missy Wolf

Missy Wolf Co-Founder, Editor, Journalist & Vice President of the American Country Music Association

From an early age I knew music and entertainment were in my blood. I have always been enamored with the idea of being in this industry, though I never wanted to be a front and center "Star". Taking the audience behind the scenes for up close conversations with the artists they love is where I want to be. Life in lyrics has always been my style, so as my favorite country artist Wade Hayes sings, I am living my life and chasing my dreams! Conducting interviews, meeting talented people and sharing stories and adventure are my passion. My new favorite hashtag is #iaskyouanswer, so stay tuned for more interviews, articles and adventures!
