Renowned music producer, composer, and songwriter SJAE, also known as Samantha Powell or Sammy Jay, has granted us the exclusive premiere of her new single, "Change the Wind," from her eagerly awaited EP, Paper Hearts. Set for release on November 6, 2024, this sophomore single promises to be a poignant exploration of resilience and the human spirit. Listen here first!
SJAE, with a career spanning over two decades, has consistently pushed the boundaries of music, blending traditional elements with modern technology to create a sound that is both unique and universally appealing. Born in Wales and schooled at the prestigious Brit School of Performing Arts, SJAE's musical journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. From signing with BMG Records and Warner Chappell to becoming a staple in the Los Angeles music scene, her career has been marked by versatility and innovation.
On the song “Change the Wind,” SJae reveals, “Even though you might find yourself in circumstances out of your control, you can change the story within those circumstances to make it better. A lot of the time, things don’t go at all as we’ve planned, but the song talks about how the spectrum of life’s experiences is where the point of living it lies.” Delving into such circumstances, ‘Paper Hearts’ was written during the height of the Covid pandemic, while political tensions were dividing America, families and friends were torn apart by conflicting decisions on everything important in their lives. Additionally, SJae had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of thyroid cancer, and underwent two surgeries, just as the world locked down and fell off its axis.
For Paper Hearts, SJAE collaborated with a stellar cast of musicians including bassist Hutch Hutchinson, drummer MB Gordy, and guitarist Diego Garcia, all contributing remotely due to lockdown restrictions. This ensemble, known for their work with artists like Bonnie Raitt, Pharrell Williams, and Mercedes Sosa, brought their unique talents to the project, resulting in a rich, layered sound that complements SJAE's intimate vocals and piano work.
With Paper Hearts, SJAE aims to convey a message of radical acceptance and solidarity. "We are all just doing the best we can," she explains, highlighting the shared human condition of being "perfectly imperfect, fragile yet tenacious, and beautifully human." This sentiment is woven through the EP, making it not just an auditory experience but a deeply emotional journey.
"Change the Wind" will be available across all major music platforms starting November 6, 2024. Fans and newcomers alike are invited to dive into SJAE's latest creation, where her signature blend of folk, blues, country, and soul music promises to resonate with the heart of the human experience.
