Talking Influences with Dan Maines of Clutch
Dan Maines, a founding member of Clutch, sits down with me at Chicago Open Air to talk some of his influences- both as a bass player and just musically in general. Maines has been an integral part of Clutch since its formation in 1990.
Maines drops influential names ranging from Geezer Bulter of Black Sabbath to Bad Brains that influence him personally. He speaks to the sound of Clutch, and how it has been influenced by a wide array of different musical styles. Each member of Clutch draws influence from slightly different styles, such as blues and jazz, which when mixed with the various rock and metal influences create the sound that we know as Clutch.
Maines mentions albums by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and of course, Black Sabbath, which he can listen to front to back and not get tired of.
After a brief conversation regarding influences, we move onto what is new with Clutch. He mentions that the band is focusing on writing in their downtime and are hoping to enter the studio to record a new album come the new year. Maines also quickly mentions The Bakerton Group- the instrumental side project of Clutch and lets us know what is going on with them as well.
