Conversations with Missy: Richard Sterban on Elvis and The Oak Ridge Boys

by Missy Wolf / 2437 days ago / Comments

Anticipating his entrance into the office of The Oak Ridge Boys, I was excited and eager to speak with legendary Bass Singer, Richard Sterban.

Sterban is one of the very few artists I know of that can sing at an extremely low register. In the early 1970's, Sterban hired by J.D. Sumner to join J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet. During this time, Sterban's vocal ability not only landed him a part in the band, he was also blessed with the opportunity to join Elvis on stage.

During his time with Elvis, Sterban shared many great moments with the "King of Rock and Roll". In his book, From Elvis To Elvira, Sterban describes many of those moments. From everything I know about Elvis, Sterban was definitely lucky to have been able to experience the world of the "King" if only for a short while.

While speaking with Sterban, I wanted to talk about his fondest memories with Elvis.  We laughed as he shared stories about one of the best and most real pranks of all time, food choices and more. Sterban even shared what it was like to have been able to sleep over at Graceland. Can you imagine the stories those walls could tell?

Being that this week is "Elvis Week' with today marking the 40 year anniversary of the beloved rock star's death, our conversation with Sterban was centered around Elvis, however, we still wanted to share moments with The Oakridge Boys, Johnny Cash, Sunny West and Red West. Each of these people had a unique connection to Elvis. Each of these friends and fellow artists all played a part in the remarkable life of Elvis that was cut too short.

We hope that you enjoy our great conversation with Sterban and that you walk away with learning something new about the man that broke hearts, made women swoon, made me jealous, and just made the world a much better place with his compassion, generosity, and untouchable musical abilities.

Please be sure to follow The Oakridge Boys on social media and do not forget to grab your copy of Sterban's book, From Elvis To Elvira. There are so many stories and memories on those pages that you will definitely want to learn about. ~Missy

About Missy Wolf

Missy Wolf Co-Founder, Editor, Journalist & Vice President of the American Country Music Association

From an early age I knew music and entertainment were in my blood. I have always been enamored with the idea of being in this industry, though I never wanted to be a front and center "Star". Taking the audience behind the scenes for up close conversations with the artists they love is where I want to be. Life in lyrics has always been my style, so as my favorite country artist Wade Hayes sings, I am living my life and chasing my dreams! Conducting interviews, meeting talented people and sharing stories and adventure are my passion. My new favorite hashtag is #iaskyouanswer, so stay tuned for more interviews, articles and adventures!
