Alien: Covenant - A Preview

2017 is "The Year of the Sequels" in terms of movies. Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Star Wars: Episode VIII, John Wick 2, and now, Aliens: Covenant will also make its mark on the big screen this year.

Alien: Covenant is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated movies of the year thanks to a trailer that was released just a few days ago. The trailer seems to show how the movie will go back to its terrifying roots of exploring the unknown world of aliens.

Above is Alien: Covenant's first official trailer (video at top of page):

Alien introduced viewers to the character of the relentless and fierce Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) back in 1979 who managed to kill the Queen Alien single handedly using a power loader. It was because of that memorable battle between a mere mortal and an advanced life form that garnered the film a cult following, as well as seeing a slew of crossovers, spinoffs, and video games in the franchise’s honor.

Perhaps the most popular crossover that was conceived was its partnership with Predator, which originally starred action movie legend, Arnold Schwarzenegger. As for video games, Alien: Isolation, which won PC Gamer's Game of the Year 2016 was the most recent title to tap into the success of the franchise. There have also been many casual games such as the popular Aliens which is being featured on digital gaming site Slingo, that uses the franchise's CG designs and animation. On top of these examples, there are plenty of other Alien-related products on the Internet that have brought in millions of dollars to 20th Century Fox.

The Alien franchise is big; in fact, it’s huge. So it's not surprising the world will get to see yet another story based on the mysterious and deadly life forms that we have come accustomed to seeing as such an integral part of the franchise.

In Aliens: Covenant, lead character Katherine Waterson seems to have striking similarities to Ripley both in terms of looks and her ability to look after herself. That said, just like in the first movie, it’s not a film for the faint-hearted.

If the trailer provides us with anything, it’s that very few characters will make it through Covenant alive. Prometheus, which was released in 2012 and the official prequel to the first Alien movie, in most people’s eyes failed to fit into the whole Alien universe. Based on Covenant's trailer, however, it would seem that movie director Ridley Scott will revert back to the franchise’s roots – something that has excited hardcore Alien fans.

Alien: Covenant will be showing in theaters on May 19, 2017.
