Conversations with Missy: Hailey Whitters
Growing up in Iowa, the oldest of six children, living in a town with a population of approximately 600, it is not hard to imagine dreaming of a very different life. Though Hailey Whitters was not from a musical family, she felt that music was her calling.
Her friends agree that she is a risk taker, and Hailey admits it herself. It really was not a surprise that after visiting Nashville at the age of 16 and falling in love with it, Hailey would soon move there. That is exactly what she did one year later.
Hailey signed with Carnival Music in 2012 after a lot of hard work. Playing in bars all around Nashville for tips from tourists, along with writers nights playing her own material gained her a lot of attention. Songs like "Black Sheep" and "One More Hell" (written about the loss of her 19-year-old brother, who died in a car accident), had fans connecting to her, becoming emotional and praising her work.
During our conversation, Hailey and I spoke about writing the song "Black Sheep". There is a line in that song that immediately drew me in. It was clever and true. We talked about how it came about and how the rest of the song easily came together. We laughed as you can imagine, as just about everyone has someone in their family who likes to point out that others are the black sheep as if they themselves are pure white!
